Somalia, Algeria sign major cooperation deals

By Somalia Today

Algiers (Somalia Today) — Somalia and Algeria cemented a new strategic partnership on Tuesday, marking a new era of cooperation between the two nations.

In Algiers, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, watched as their ministers signed a series of major agreements.

These are not just symbolic gestures. The pacts are designed to build a practical, real-world partnership. They focus on core building blocks of national growth: energy, education, and economic development.

Furthermore, ministers from both sides laid the groundwork for future cooperation, including the development of Somalia’s oil and gas sectors and the creation of new opportunities for its livestock exports.

A tone of deep friendship marked the visit. President Mohamud warmly thanked President Tebboune and the people of Algeria for their “brotherhood.”

He highlighted Algeria’s long-standing role as a defender of African interests, a sentiment that set the stage for one of the day’s most significant announcements.

A pledge for Somalia’s next generation

In a move that could shape Somalia’s future, Algeria pledged 500 scholarships for Somali students. This is a strategic investment, not just a number.

The scholarships are specifically designed to build a skilled workforce for Somalia’s rebuilding efforts. They will target degrees in agriculture, fisheries, and petroleum management. These are the very skills the nation needs to power its reconstruction.

To ensure the smooth operation of this new partnership, the two nations also agreed to simplify travel arrangements for their officials. As a result, Somali diplomatic passport holders will now receive a visa upon arrival in Algeria. This is a practical step to cut red tape and foster easier collaboration.

For Somalia, this visit is about more than just the ink drying on new deals. It’s about rebuilding its economy and institutions after decades of instability, and it knows it cannot do it alone.

President Mohamud’s praise for Algeria’s “African Cooperation and Solidarity Fund” as a “far-sighted initiative” sent a clear message. Somalia is ready to rejoin the continent as a strong, contributing partner.
