Our story: Why we exist
We started Somalia Today on October 10, 2025, because we believe in the power of a shared story. For too long, the world has seen Somalia through a narrow lens, often missing the complete picture of its resilience, complexity, and progress. We knew there was a better, more truthful story to tell.
Our mission is to bridge that gap. We are an independent newsroom dedicated to empowering our community with credible, fact-based journalism while ensuring the world sees Somalia for what it truly is. We believe that a well-informed public is the cornerstone of a strong democracy, and that begins with journalism you can trust.
Our approach: Journalism as a force for good
We see our work as more than just reporting the news; it’s about being a catalyst for positive change. Our newsroom is built on the idea that ethical, non-partisan journalism can strengthen our society from the ground up.
Every day, we work to produce reporting that:
- Holds power accountable and makes governance more transparent.
- Amplifies the voices of women, youth, and communities that are often unheard.
- Shines a light on human rights and champions a more inclusive future.
- Counters misinformation with thoughtful, fact-based analysis.
- Connects Somalia’s journey to the wider world.
By grounding global conversations in local realities, we help build trust at home and understanding abroad.
Our impact: How our work creates change
Our journalism is designed to create tangible, lasting impact. We focus our efforts on four key areas that are vital to Somalia’s future:
- Stronger governance: Our investigative work gives citizens the information they need to hold leaders accountable, promoting transparency and better decision-making.
- A more inclusive society: By centering the experiences of women, youth, and marginalized groups, we ensure their voices help shape the national conversation.
- Deeper peace & security: Our reporting supports peacebuilding and justice by focusing on community-led solutions, dialogue, and the rule of law.
- Greater economic opportunity: Our coverage of business, innovation, and education helps build the economic confidence essential for long-term stability and growth.
Our promise to you: Our commitment to the truth
Trust is the most important thing we build. It’s the foundation of everything we do. We are committed to the highest international standards of journalism, and we make this promise to you:
- We will be accurate: Every story we publish goes through a rigorous fact-checking process. Getting it right is our highest priority.
- We will be independent: Our reporting is free from the influence of any political party, corporation, or special interest. Our only loyalty is to the truth and to our readers.
- We will be transparent: We are open about our process. If we make a mistake, we will correct it quickly, clearly, and publicly.
- We will serve the public: Our success is measured by how well our journalism serves the public good and fosters a healthy, informed debate.
